Gray Matters: How to use two washes in two complementary colors harmonized with gray to generate quick and evocative paintings – is a mouthful title. What it wants to convey is that most paintings can be painted using a flow method of watercolors, top to bottom, like a wash. Two complementary colors are then used to achieve maximum color contrast, harmonized by using gray. The class will emphasize wet in wet painting, loose capture of scene and abstraction of parts of a painting. Come with an attitude to challenge yourself and to practice hard. There will be time to brush up technical skills, especially the art of looking as well as time to see many examples of using same technique while painting varied scenes.

This is an extended version of workshop Uma taught at Chicago Seminar and at USK Symposium in Portugal.

Is previous watercolor experience required?

Yes, previous watercolor experience is needed.

Is this a repeat of the workshop held in Porto, Portugal for the Urban Sketchers’ Symposium?

USK symposium workshops are 3 hour long workshops held outdoors. This is a more intense workshop where we will start with exercises in studio before we step out the next day.

  • An extended workshop works at a slower pace – but allows to cement the basics it needs to cover for a strong outdoor painting session on day 2.
  • Longer time duration also allows for more material to be explored.
  • An indoor to outdoor class transition has been shown to boost confidence of the students and that increases the happiness quotient of class participants as well as the instructor.

  2. I thoroughly enjoyed the class. It was as advertised; technically challenging. I like the simple approach and beautiful outcomes, so I’m definitely motivated to practice what I learned to try to approach the complexity and beauty you achieve in your paintings.
I appreciate your calm demeanor and clear teaching style. I would definitely take another one of your classes

  3. I enjoyed every minute of this workshop! I consider myself an intermediate-advanced watercolor color painter, and the pace was challenging and fast enough that it was never dull, but offered enough time to really practice the skills and techniques. I will never dread painting a wash again!
Besides watercolor-specific techniques, we also learned useful and accessible methods of seeing and simplifying a scene before we begin to paint.
The length of the workshop and amount of content was perfect. In some other workshops I’ve been overwhelmed with all the information being provided, but I felt that Uma gave us just enough to sink our teeth into and really learn some valuable skills that can work in many different applications.
I am looking forward to attending more of Uma’s workshops in the future!

  4. Well, I think I got it. Can you believe that! First day of the workshop was a breeze, second day very frustrating and disappointing—not with the instruction, but with myself in that I couldn’t get all the new stuff in one concise painting. Today (day after the workshop) I went to the baylands by myself to paint a very simple scene and it all kind of came together. Just think what tomorrow might hold…
There’s nothing wishy-washy about Uma’s thoughtful instruction. It’s clear, purposeful and sequential. Her teaching becomes more meaningful with practice, that’s because there’s so much there—a content-filled 2 days. Oh, and it also comes with encouragement, enthusiasm and kindness.

  5. I slept well both nights of the workshop because – wow! -my brain and body were working hard – it was great! I have taken a number of watercolor workshops recently because I really want to learn how to master this challenging medium. Uma was one of the best instructors I have ever had. She is wicked funny and incredibly intelligent (both qualities necessary for watercolor, I believe!) I also felt that with as much information that she was giving – and it was pretty non-stop and very generous – she was also one of the kindest instructors I have ever had. She is so encouraging of everyone in class, (whatever your level) that you can’t help but feel like you WILL get it eventually and that you are doing a fantastic job. What a great guide to have on this precarious and wonderful journey. I’m looking forward to more workshops with Uma! (also – every single person I spoke with was more than content with the workshop – that is pretty rare)

  6. Uma – Thank you again for such a great workshop. I enjoyed every minute and it felt good to be challenged and slow down and think about the scene I’m approaching. Here are a couple of photos – my first washes (so stripey), the city scape (what a difference from my labored one) and my painting from Sunday. And as I told you, I’ll never complain about not having something to paint again! Look forward to seeing you again in another workshop. Best regards. Deb

  7. I like Uma’s style as an artist and also as an instructor. She teaches you how to simplify things and de-clutter the scene. Specially if you are someone like me who is afraid of the details, then Uma will tell you how you can avoid those successfully 🙂 She is very approachable and makes it very easy to ask even the basic questions without intimidation. She paid attention to each and every person’s work and offered personal feedback. It is pure pleasure to watch her demos. I think the class is worth it just for the demos themselves. I came out of the workshop motivated to practice more and more. This was my second workshop with her and I would not miss a chance to take a workshop with Uma again.
