There is beauty in these hidden narratives; in the years of wear and tear\, in the various dents and scuffs\, missing paint and rough edges. This workshop will show you how to use pen and ink to capture the textures and details of “lived-in” places and things in order to find the story within. An old boat\, a dilapidated barn\, the rusted shell of an old car are all subjects we might seek out in this workshop. We will create detailed pen and ink sketches that honor the history of these subjects as we dive into how best to capture surfaces and textures in the absence of color media. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nBecome familiar with fountain pen and ink wash\nBlocking in rough shapes and establishing a composition via thumbnails and pre-drawing\nUsing ink and wash details to show the character and age of subject\nWork with a detailed subject without becoming overwhelmed\n\nInstructor: Shari Blaukopf (LINK to Shari’s online classes)\nRed Rocks and Emerald Waves: Capturing the Rugged Shores of Madeline Island \nNo sketchbook of Madeline Island would be complete without at least several pages devoted to the island’s location on historic Lake Superior. Clear emerald waters. Rugged shorelines of poplar\, birch and maple. And above all\, red sandstone bluffs overlooking secluded bays. This is precisely why the Apostle Islands are so widely celebrated. From a shady spot within Big Bay State Park\, we will work on capturing the ever-shifting relations between water\, waves\, reflections\, trees and skies. You will learn to simplify a complex scene\, using a big wet brush and the fewest possible strokes to create a sense of spontaneity and freshness: in the shadowed rocks\, in the gently lapping waters\, and in the varied greens that frame these enchanting scenes. \nParticipants will learn: \n\nEdges: How to use the right brush at the right time to get the best edge on water\, trees and rocks\nWetness: It’s all about knowing when to have a dripping wet brush for waves or a dry one for texture on rocks\nReflections: These are simpler than you think — especially once you see how I paint them wet-in-wet\nColour Saturation: The freshest results come from getting the right amount of pigment on your brush the first time. Put it down and leave it alone!\nGreens: The most interesting hues for foliage and trees come from your palette\, not from a tube. You’ll learn to mix varied greens that make a scene more lively and interesting\nSimplification: Once you understand how water scenes can be simplified in watercolour\, you can apply the same techniques to everything from puddles in the street to waves on the ocean\n\nInstructor: Uma Kelkar\nJuicy Trees \nPlants take up various roles in a landscape painting\, as the main actor (example 1\, example 2) or as supporting cast (example). Both roles can be satisfied using the wet-in-wet approach. We will start building individual trees in class with some color theory and progress to building collections of trees. Outdoor portion of class will involve jumping in front of a tree thicket to capture a row of trees in the juiciest manner possible. All examples for this session will come from drawing/sketching/painting as a vehicle to conveying the concepts. This workshop will be held live on Zoom where students will have the opportunity to interact with Uma and other students. \nThere are no shortcuts to hard work\, but there is no reason to not avoid common pitfalls. In this weekend workshop called Watercolor Toolset\, learn tricks of a seasoned artist. Don’t let the words seasoned throw you off – Uma will work with you to make a reduced but versatile palette+brush set\, offer systems to avoid blotchy watercolors\, teach basics of color mixing and teach you tricks of using limited water while not making it muddy. Concepts will be delivered piece meal but each concept will be tied into an exercise to see usage of the concept. SUMMARY:Rhythm is a Dancer: Learning to employ repeating motifs to bring in various moods in your sketches (Amsterdam\, Netherlands)
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes\, when you are in tight urban space\, majority of your view can be in a single plane – that is\, there is no distinct foreground and background. In such a constrained space\, repeating motifs are often employed e.g. windows or similar architecture to promote a feeling of peace and calm. This workshop will present the spectrum of repetition and how to employ it to project different moods in a sketch. Repetition can be used to project peace\, unity\, harmony but too much off it can\nrepresent lack of variety\, lifelessness and boredom. Participants in this workshop will first verbalize the feel they want to put in their sketches\, then\, come up with strategies to insert the emotion that they wish to convey using the techniques Uma will bring.\n\n \nWe will meet in downtown San Jose and be in a workshop that will require participants to settle down on a street in close proximity of each other. Class will be fast paced and will need intermediate drawing skills. Since it’s open to your tools\, bring a tool that you are most masterful with. Artists who will do only line drawing or those who will do exercises in monochrome e.g. single pigment ink\, please be aware of concepts of harmony\, balance\, unity\, gradation and ways to do this in your medium of choice. This class requires being emotionally open in a group setting. We will talk about feelings and what we want to do with our pieces. It’s a story creating class not a motor skill building class and therefore mental exhaustion is expected. Mental exhaustion with benefits.

DESCRIPTION:I am excited to be coming to Atlanta and look forward to sketching with this new USK chapter. You don’t have to be an urban sketcher or have attended a USK-Atlanta paint out to attend my workshop. It’s open to all those who endeavor to enjoy sketching outdoors. \nI have two workshops allowing you to choose whatever works best for you. One\, two or both. \nThe first workshop held from 9:30am-12:30pm\, is tailored for those who’d like to share insights from my practice that have helped me overcome feelings of overwhelm or fear when sketching in public. We will go over some thumb rules of proportion\, perspective and color palette. Think of this as a refresher course. \nThe second workshop held from 1:30pm-4:30pm\, on the other hand takes those who would like to explore the topic of direct watercolor but want to share in my ways of controlling watercolor. This class will emphasize direct watercolor in a park/botanical garden setting with a strong lean towards landscapes. \nVenue: Public Park in Atlanta <– It will be either Piedmont Park or the Historic Cemetery\, I am currently investigating both options and am checking to see no new events are being held at either places for us to have our day there. SUMMARY:WATERCOLOR: Elegance in Watercolors (Chicago)
DESCRIPTION:This is an investment workshop – we will invest in our art and get the best return on investment by employing just enough shapes\, colors and strokes. This is Uma’s definition of elegance and we will study how to use just enough design elements to make watercolors sing. Exercises during each day will build up towards a final in-studio painting. We will focus on the technical skills at the beginning followed by discussion of elements of design and Uma’s philosophy of painting. We will also do a few verbal exercises and exercises that help us ‘look’ or develop the artist’s eye. If you’ve always wanted to overcome the fear of wet in wet painting\, rest assured that at end of the workshop\, you will feel more confident about approaching it independently. The workshop promises to be full of rigorous exercises and exhaustive mental challenges which will leave you spent but stronger – like a weight training class should leave you! The group dynamic is a wonderful opportunity to experience different perspectives within wet-in-wet style of painting. SUMMARY:WATERCOLOR: Gray Matter\, San Jose
DESCRIPTION:Gray Matters: How to use two washes in two complementary colors harmonized with gray to generate quick and evocative paintings – is a mouthful title. What it wants to convey is that most paintings can be painted using a flow method of watercolors\, top to bottom\, like a wash. Two complementary colors are then used to achieve maximum color contrast\, harmonized by using gray. The class will emphasize wet in wet painting\, loose capture of scene and abstraction of parts of a painting. Come with an attitude to challenge yourself and to practice hard. There will be time to brush up technical skills\, especially the art of looking as well as time to see many examples of using same technique while painting varied scenes.  \nThis is an extended version of workshop Uma taught at Chicago Seminar and at USK Symposium in Portugal. \n
