Are you ready to get away on a creative break and make art with like-minded people? Join Uma Kelkar, Suhita Shirodkar and Nina Khashchina on a creative all-inclusive weekend:  instruction, supplies, lodging and food included when you join us on this retreat.

5pm Friday Sep 23, 2022 – 3pm Sunday Sep 25, 2022

Deck of Textures is a two-day on-location, in-person experience which emphasizes finding joy in the process of making. Each workshop attendee will engage in short nature walks to find inspiration in nature and then use found objects/photographs to inform the guided explorations in workshop sessions through the day. Our media will be diverse, ranging from watercolor, ink, crayons to charcoal. Some of our work will be individually made and some collaboratively. Emphasis will be on experimentation and demonstrations will include techniques in mark-making, creating textures, experimental printmaking and collage among others.

Your inspiration will be our breathtaking locationAsilomar on Pacific Coast with your choice of motifs ranging from representational to abstract. We will be within walking distance from the beach. The workshop will be held in a spacious, heated, enclosed yet ventilated room.

Full vaccination proof will be checked at time of workshop check-in unless you have uploaded it with us below.

Session 1: Uma

In the first session led by Uma, you will feel the color palette and textures of large natural elements like facades, vegetation, beaches, cliffs ledges. Using sumi-e or colored ink and watercolors, we will use different tempos of putting down large shapes and of introducing secondary media at various drying times to build textures into it our works. Think of this session as though practicing staccato and legato of painting strokes.

Session 2: Suhita

In session 2, you will explore mark making in myriad media, experiment with mixing and layering media and with using found tools to create unusual marks. You will also build on experiments from Session 1 and start to combine and layer techniques into dynamic pieces.

Session 3: Nina

Nina will introduce quick and portable printing techniques and their phenomenal capacity to expand and simplify your creative practice. We will add whimsical and colorful printed lines and textures and play with adding interesting bold shapes and subtle patterns to existing line works.
